Championship Footballer visits the Academy

John Marquis, a striker for Millwall visited the Academy to talk to ASDAN students who have been working on Module 3 (Sports and Leisure). One of the challenges is to interview a professional sportsman.

As Miss Fuller is a Millwall season ticket holder, she asked the club if one of their players could come in to be interviewed. Jason Henley the Education & Training Department Team Leader for the Millwall Community Scheme contacted Miss Fuller and arranged for John Marquis to come in.

The students prepared suitable questions for the player and used these to initiate the interview. Jason Henley came with John Marquis and was able to give the students some background about the community scheme and his own career route; which encouraged them to think about their own future career plans.

John Marquis is only 18 and doing well as a professional player;  the students were able to identify with him as he isn’t much older and he shared memories from his school days.

Jason Henley encouraged the students to continue to work hard on their ASDAN portfolios and promised them some tickets for themselves and family members once they had achieved their Silver award and the chance to have John Marquis present them with their certificates on the ‘hallowed turf’ of The New Den before a match.

The five students William Wiltshire, Jack Smith, Hasan Dervis, George Gigney and Jack McAlister from year 11 represented the school in a mature way and enjoyed meeting both men and finding out about life in the football community.
