Young Ambassadors Conference

Four students from the Business Academy travelled to the Oval Cricket Ground on Friday 18 November to attend the Young Ambassador’s Conference.

Young Ambassadors are part of a scheme set up by the Olympic Committee to capture the views of young people all over the world through Sport, Culture and Education.  The Young Ambassadors are the front line task force helping to fulfil this promise in Britain and have been chosen because they are talented role models.

Faye Yates worked hard last year as our Gold Ambassador to deliver the information and work with other Young Ambassadors on local projects.  This year Faye is elevated to a Platinum Ambassador as she has experience and can mentor our four new Gold Ambassadors.

Opeyemi Ayodele, Jordon Granger, Dami Adegoke-Noel and Ayodele Kajero were chosen to represent the school due to their commitment to sport and their willingness to participate in the Young Ambassador’s scheme.

Faye, Jordon, Dami and Ayo attended the conference and worked with a number of athletes including, for the Platinum Ambassadors Johnny Davis, British No. 1 Fencing champion earning Silver and Bronze medals in previous Olympics.  Our Gold Ambassadors worked with Tim Prendergast, a Paralympic Athlete who is registered blind but runs the 1500 metres.  He earned Gold in Athens for 800 Metres and two silver medals in 2000.  He aims to run the 1500 Metres in 2012.  The 160 Gold Ambassadors were all split up and sent off with their chosen Athlete to work in teams and were all given Olympic names.  Jordon, Dami and Ayo were put in Athens.  Faye worked with the other Platinum Ambassadors.

We also welcomed a guest for the day; it was the Olympic torch which was displayed for everyone.  The torch will eventually be sent to Greece where it will be lit by the sun and then transported in a purpose built container to Britain where 8,000 people will take it around the British Isles starting on 19 May.  It will end its journey at the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium on 27 July 2012.

For the Ambassadors the afternoon sessions were a little different.  They were required to perform a cheer to music which would be entered into a competition which is to run across all 9 conferences.  The performances were judged by dignitaries at each event and the winners will go on to be judged with the other 8 to find an overall winner.  The Cheer will then be adopted by the Youth Sports Trust as the official Cheer of the Olympics.  Dami seemed to particularly enjoy this and helped choreography his team’s effort which was comical, lively and well delivered.  This ultimately won and will now go through for further judging.

With many ideas and leads it is hoped the Young Ambassadors will now work together to promote the Olympic Games and the Olympic values around the school.
