The Business Academy Bexley was the first ‘City Academy’ to open in 2002 pioneering the way for the 346 academies that followed. The Garrard Education Trust, who sponsored the Academy, initiated the change in parliamentary legislation to enable the Academy to add a Primary Section in 2004 and become the Country’s first “All-through” Academy. 

The Business Academy Bexley is a state-maintained, but independently run all-ability school.  It is owned and managed by the charitable trust company Bexley Business Academy Ltd and the Board of Governors, equivalent to the Board of Trustees maintains overall control of strategic policy decisions including disbursement of retained funds and funds from the Young People's Learning Agency (YPLA).  the Chairman of the Board is Mr Tim Garnham.

The Academy currently has 1,587 students on role. The Chief Executive is Mrs Sam Elms. the Executive Principal is Mrs Christina Moon. The Headteacher of the Secondary Section is Mr Guy Nichols and the Consultant Headteacher of the Primary Section is Mr Andy Nicholas.
